ELK RIVER - MAY 25, 2014
Dave, his daughter Ashton and I started the holiday weekend off right with a float on the Elk River, and the smallmouth didn't disappoint! Dave with a nice smallmouth that jumped completely out of the water and took his Wiggle Minnow on the way back down! It was Ashton's first time to chase smallmouth with a fly rod, but she got the hang of it pretty quickly! Ashton with her first smallmouth bass on a fly rod--congrats Ashton, well done! The river was in great shape and relatively uncrowded (at least by Elk River standards), so we took our time...
Buffalo National River - June 12, 2012
I just received this smallmouth report from David: "Hey man, hope you had a blast in Mexico. I just got back from a slightly less exotic 24-mile float in the Lower Buffalo Wilderness Area (we put in at Rush and floated to the White River), and the smallmouth action was red hot! I tied on an olive Crazy Dad at the beginning of the trip and didn't switch flies for 3 days--unimaginative, I know, but the fish never quit biting it, so I just couldn't bring myself to change. Most of the brownies were in the 10-inch range, but I...
Elk River - March 15, 2012
In the midst of the White Bass run, I have had smallmouth on my mind (go figure). Therefore, I twisted a few arms to come with me up to the Elk for an afternoon float in search of some Smallie action. Turns out, we found it, and there were a lot of big fish in the river. Although we didn't land anything huge, we did get several fish this size to the boat, as well as quite a few more smaller ones. If you haven't fished for smallmouth on the fly rod, swing by the shop and we can point...
A Creek in the Ozarks - November 3, 2011
We camped/fished an Ozark creek over the weekend and had a ball—beautiful fall foliage, remote country, cool temps, and warm whiskey. It was a bear getting in there—the last 18 miles to the campsite (which is still officially closed) was a winding 45-minute drive over mountain gravel roads, and that made the whole experience even sweeter. We got a handful of brownies to bite olive Crazy Dads, but the highlight was undoubtedly this 17+" bruiser, who bit on the final cast of the trip. Danny was so eager to release the fish that he tripped and took a swim while...
A Creek in the Ozarks - August 21, 2011
Went out Friday and Saturday on an Ozark stream, and the bass provided some great top-water action on foam flies and poppers! Josh S. With the recent rains providing a much needed bump in water levels, the warm-water fishing has been very good lately. Thanks for the report, Josh, and congrats on some great top-water action!
